you're right, there still were bugs with the sysvinit init script of
mailman3 and mailman3-web. I now finally took the time to install a test
environment with sysvinit and test the scripts thoroughly.

We fixed a bunch of bugs in the sysvinit scripts and uploaded new
packages. The current mailman3 and mailman3-web packages in Debian
Unstable and stretch-backports should work for you.

Can you give them a try again and report back whether the bug still
exists for you?

I'm pretty confident that the bug you discovered with hyperkitty
connecting to the wrong database backend was due to broken sysvinit
scripts, but I'm looking forward to your feedback :)
