Update notifier/manager for MATE

Hi

I don't know if this is the right list to pose such a question. If not,
my apologies, and glad for any guidance you might provide.

My most important customer (that'd be my SO :-) is a happy user of
MATE on Debian Jessie. She misses some kind of update notifier (for
Debian packages with pending updates).

Is there something like that for MATE? Which package provides it?
Otherwise: any alternatives/workarounds?
