There currently is no man power to maintain a second branch of MATE on  

The next upstream releases of MATE will appear in Debian, once the  
freeze is over. Please let us focus on making MATE 1.16 for Debian 9  
ready for release. (I myself need to get back to that task, too. To  
many other open isssues that have more prio here, right now).
