Thanks for the information. Unfortunately, I am not fully getting what  
produces that build failure.

Did you simply build mate-polkit as in Debian stretch? Or did you  
apply the proposed patch? Did you try the build on a Debian stretch  
system? Or in a stretch chroot? Don't try the build in testing/unstable.

Please provide more info, ideally check what Debian version you built  
against and if it has not been stretch, please try to build against  
stretch once more.
