On a brand new install of Stretch on 2 different computers (both x86-64) 
mate-panel is unstable and the notification icons (e.g. bluetooth, 
sound, network) disappear without warning. This also occurred when Mate 
1.16 was released on an old install of Stretch that was upgraded from 
Jessie, at the time I thought my settings may have caused the problem. 
Now I am wondering if this is a gtk3 incompatibility issue.

I have tried various icons (Moblin, Gnome-Brave, default Mate just to 
name a few) and the same thing happens. Created new test-user with 
default settings (nothing from my old settings was migrated to the new 
user) using default icons and panel layout and the icons disappeared 
after about 10 minutes.

The only icon (if it is available) that ever stays is the, added by me, 
shutdown icon. Icons can be brought back by clicking where they are 
supposed to be and opening one of the options provided in the drop down 
menu (e.g. click on location sound icon was and a menu will appear, open 
Sound Preferences and the icon will reappear and stay while sound 
preferences is open). This indicates the location is still being used by 
the process even though the icon has disappeared.

Occasionally the workspaces area also disappears and nothing but a 
reboot will bring it back.

how to obtain it.
