Could you please provide the contents of ~/.xession-errors after the error
has occurred? If there are any components of MATE crashing, it should show
up in that log file. Also, can you check your syslog or dmesg for any
crash messages?

Please be aware that you are mixing in packages from an external source and
you are therefore creating a so-called FrankenDebian [1]. Debian Multimedia
is not an official Debian repository and should only ever add it with down-
graded priority (less than 500). Otherwise APT will randomly pull in packages
from that source.
