Oh, yes, you're right. I completely forgot about Replaces.

This actually shouldn't happen as the same people who create the MATE
Debian packages are also involved with the Debian packages and
will perform all further updates to the packages in Debian only,
leaving the MATE Debian packages in their old versions.

I will talk to Stefano regarding this issue and ask him not
to update the packages in MATE's repositories anymore.
