Bug#747414: Upgrade path 1.6 to 1.8

Hi Adrian, hi Frank,

I have fixed several of those upgrade errors in other 1.8 packages already.

I want to cause as little trouble on the upgrade path as necessary, so I do support upgrades from MATE 1.6 (Ubuntu trusty or upstream repo).

I will fix this issue over the weekend...
