a desktop shell can also be used via remote desktop solutions like
X2Go or VNC.
Pulling in a display manager with the complete Xorg stack is a slight
overkill for those use cases.
To get into the delight of MATE, install one of the Debian desktop CDs
(any of those have a DM installed) and then co-install MATE.
If you want to make MATE the default session manager, run this command
as root once:
update-alternatives --config x-session-manager
Select the number "mate-session" and be happy for the time being...
