  Obviously the below discussion has already been lead elsewhere earlier [1].

Note that MATE itself does not handle the ~/Desktop folder directly,  
but uses xdg-user-dirs for it.

 From the quoted post [1] I get that desktop is translated as  
"Schreibtisch" nowadays and "workspace" (my desktop normally has four  
of those) is translated as "Arbeitsbereich" or "Arbeitsfläche".

So: the "Schreibtisch" (desktop) is used for all "Arbeitsflächen"  
(workspaces).

Personally, I agree with you that the work "Schreibtisch" is a rather  
"unglücklich gewählter Begriff".

I am sorry, but I have to tag this bug as "won't fix", because it is  
beyond my scope as one of the Debian maitainers of MATE to change the  
German translation of all related packages.
