It actually was discussed to have MATE as a default DE for jessie [1],
but that approach was dismissed and GNOME continues to be the default
DE, as (a) the MATE packaging team could need more man power (so this
is actually taking a lot of pressure from the MATE pkg team for now)
and (b) the packages haven't been in Debian long enough to eradicate
all kinks and wobbles.
But basically, MATE has become one of the official DEs in Debian and
if you peer over to the Ubuntu side, MATE is about to become an
official flavour there. I'd like to see someone picking up a Debian
MATE project (in terms of providing Debian jessie ISOs that have MATE
as default DE (due to lack of time I won't do that myself)).
