So, I had another go at this and it turns out, I should have read more
carefully what Jaume had discovered previously. The user switching does
actually work when the gdmflexiserver command is moved out of the way.

Thus, mate-session-manager needs to improved in how it's handling the
selection of the session selection command. Currently, it seems to
blindly trying the gdmflexiserver command first, then dmtool. What it
should do indeed is check for the currently active display manager and
then choose the session selection command accordingly.

Alternatively, we could reassign this to lightdm and ask them to
install an alias for the dmtool command.
