I agree with your analysis here.

ah, and icedove isn't built against xulrunner directly anyway, so you
not only have to check that the build system is correct for xulrunner
(as shipped in debian) but also for icedove itself. That's definitely
not what we want.

ugh. I don't have any good suggestions for this, but i'm glad to know
what you're doing so i can replicate the workflow when i have a chance
to poke around on it myself. I'm familiar with that workflow,
unfortunately. I agree with you that it doesn't feel like "correct"
packaging work, even if it's functional for a one-pass build; maybe we
can improve that as the build system evolves.
