I disagree that an extension should be disabled by default just because
some people don’t like it (they shouldn’t install it in the first
place). I do understand it’s pulled in by default, but that issue is in
gnome maintainers hands (already tracked as #689858).

I just pushed a fix in Git so the new Adblock Plus tab stays in
background, I hope it will be enough to address this part of the issue.
