I guess it would be preferable to clearly state that
backward-incompatibility in the package’s metatadata, so I just staged the
following fix that should do the trick:

(The BTS seems done right now, so I can’t check if there has been a
discussion between the opening and the closing of the report, but assume
we’ll check the bug report before the next upload anyway.)
