That's because /usr/share/fonts-font-awesome/fonts/fontawesome-webfont.ttf is also a symlink. Symlink handling in Firefox is broken, but using an absolute symlink to the actual file (which is /usr/share/fonts/truetype/font-awesome/fontawesome-webfont.ttf) works.
