On my machine, I had libresid-builder-dev installed, so I see the
problem: perhaps the mpd build dependencies are insufficient after all.
I don't think it's a bug elsewhere though; either the mpd binary gets
built with sidplay support (and linked with libsidplay2) or it doesn't
:)

Personally I would be happy with this solution, but since mpd in wheezy
ships with configuration that has commented-out examples on how to use
the builtin sidplay plugin (and indeed has the build-dependency on
libsidplay2), I would assume that it's supposed to be built with sidplay
support there as well. If that is the case, it might be helpful to
require the feature in mpd by adding the --enable-sidplay configure
option.
