Bug#458018: vlc: spuriously detects arbitrary text files as subtitle files

When I run VLC on a video file in a given directory, it seems to
sometimes assume that text files that are in the same directory are
subtitle files, then squawks when it can't understand them.  This seems
rather spurious.

Example output:

This error output sometimes also appears in a secondary popup window
that covers part of the video display, which is rather annoying.  This
has happened with both AVI and QuickTime containers; I don't know what
the trigger is exactly, as it doesn't happen all the time, though it
seems to happen or not happen consistently for a given file.
