libavcodec0d and others

Hi

The description of this package says:
"This package contains a Debian-specific version of the libavcodec shared
object that should only be used by Debian packages."

Now: What should I do if I try to build an external program that tries to link
against libavcodec? against libavformat? other? Do I need to install original
versions of the libraries? They are not available from Debian, are they?

I get warnings from the linker:
/usr/bin/ld: warning: libavcodec.so.51, needed by /usr/lib/libavformat.so, may
conflict with libavcodec.so.0d
and the build does not work.

Perhaps I'm mistaken here and my problems come from a different corner, in
that case, please help me interpret the mentioned statements.

Thanks,

Peter
