Sure, shouldn't be a problem to patch this into version.sh either.

+1 for revisions. I don't like the idea to indicate a package version
by a date. Dates are ambigous, because within one day hundrets of
commits could have been uploaded to the SVN repo and you cannot tell
which one you exported. Furthermore dates are fuzzy because of time
zones, so we would need to specify all of date+time+tz to provide a
suitable reference date.
