Yesterday, a binNMU on VLC came in, saying in it's changelog:
* Rebuild against latest ffmpeg. (Closes: #483052)

But it's still not working for me:
% vlc xvid.avi
VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
[00000296] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc
`XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
[00000273] main playlist: stopping playback
