After upgrade from 0.8.6.e-2.2 to 2.3 vlc refuse to play XVID video:

VLC media player 0.8.6e Janus
[00000304] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc
`XVID'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
