To some degree, that is correct. However mplayer also includes a bounch
of other libraries as well as some own demultiplexers (which overlapping
functionality with libavformat; you can even select between them on the
command line) and IIRC even some decoders.

Also keep in mind that ffmpeg has some limitations when it comes to
specialities like metadata or seeking features. There is of course much
room for improvement in ffmpeg here. And a lot of that is done, if you
just consider the traffic on the trunk branch or the number of granted
GoSC projects.
