Could you install the vlc-dbg package and see if the gdb backtrace is
more interesting

within the first 15 lines of vlc -vvv there should be a line like:
"main libvlc debug: CPU has capabilities 486 586 MMX MMXEXT SSE SSE2".
Could you paste what it gives on your G3.
