VLC is subject to a lot of input coming from the wild (aka the Internet)
and there have been a lot of security issues notably in the demuxers of
vlc and other media player. Hence upstream decided to block running as
root by default. That is a decision that I and some other Debian and
Ubuntu maintainer of the VLC package support.
