I 
    1.) purged the pulseaudio package from my computer,

    2.) installed version 1.3.6-3 of audacity, 
    
    2.5) rebooted my computer,

    3.) deleted all audacity files in my home directory (except some that seemed to me to be
        innocuous menu files), and 

    4.) ran audacity with strace as

            $ strace -fF -o /tmp/audacity.strace.log

It 
    
    1.) displayed

            umovestr: Input/output error

        in the xterm,

    2.) asked me to choose a language (I clicked on
    "OK" for English),

    3.) displayed 

            umovestr: Input/output error
            umovestr: Input/output error
            umovestr: Input/output error

        in the xterm,

    4.) displayed the "Getting Started" window (I
    clicked on "OK"),

    5.) hung (I pressed ^c), and 
    
    6.) displayed
    
            ^CPANIC: handle_group_exit: 7301 leader 7243
            PANIC: handle_group_exit: 7303 leader 7243
