Bug#512168: Downgrading to version 1.2.4b-2.1 worked around the bug

FYI: I worked around the problem by doing

    $ aptitude remove audacity

    which seems to me to have removed

    audacity            1.3.6-2
    libsoundtouch1c2    1.3.1-2
    libwxgtk2.8-0       2.8.7.1-1.1
    libwxbase2.8-0      2.8.7.1-1.1

and installing version 1.2.4b-2.1 of audacity from
stable.
