This idea has been rejected upstream.

Responses made were basically that this could be done by replacing the shared 
library (.so) with an unstripped library.

This kind of support isn't something trivial and IMO, is not worth for us to 
maintain solely for Debian. Not to mention the fact that upstream hated us (and 
probably still hate us) for keeping a forked copy of the ffmpeg library, which is 
what we would have to do if we were to implement this kind of support.
