I think it's related to vlc's weird volume control.  If you look
at the indicator it seems to be set to 50%.  And I see no good
reason for the volume to be at 50% so I increased it.

If you go and look at the dialog it says 256.  Which might make
sense if 255 is the highest you can set on the interface.  But
it makes no sense at all from a user interface point of view.

It seems that if you set it to 512 it indicates 100%, and you
can even change it to 1024.

Distorsion can be normal once you go over 100% (256?)

I see no reason why one wants to go over 100% in a media player.
