I think I did not make my original wish clear enough; I am sorry for that. What I would
like is an option like "-probeonly" which would cause mplayer to not actually play any
content but print (configurably) all information it gathers before it normally starts
playing, i.e. e.g. the encodings used in the file, frames per second, audio samples per
second and length in hours, minutes, seconds.

Something roughly similar in parts can be achieved by using a command line like this:

MPLAYER_VERBOSE=-6 mplayer -endpos 0 -msglevel demux=4:header=-1:cplayer=4:decaudio=5:decvideo=5:all=-1 "$FILENAME"

But this still includes some unneeded information (like a complaint that no infrared
devices are available) but does not show the length of the recording.

I hope that this more detailed description now qualifies my wishlist entry for
consideration.
