Just a little comment: the very same version works fine (read: starts)
for me, but I'm testing on i686 (instead of amd64) with pure Debian
unstable.

Any chance you could provide a backtrace? (see
<http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace>, especially section 3)
