You did a good job, I have anyway some additional minor remarks that should 
be quite trivial to fix.

First, there's no need for the README.Debian file, since the user doesn't 
need to know that this is your first package. If he had some troubles, he
would anyway file a bug report.

Second, please consider to update the debian/copyright to comply with
the DEP5 [0] proposal.

And last, you should put only one dep (build-depends, depends and 
recommends) per line in order to keep the debian/control file easy to read.

Also, since you are the upstream author, you should fix your upstream
tarball with the changes you already did to make repackaging of upstream
sources easier (you don't need the debian/ directory upstream btw, since
the packaging work will be done directly in Debian).
