I don't think that a "general" mplayer installation needs a gui by
default. Placing "smplayer | mplayer-gui" in Recommends would do exactly
that for new installations. Therefore I think we should declare the
dependency exactly like Fabian suggests, but place it in Suggests of the
'mplayer' package instead.
