I don't know how others use mplayer, but I've been typing

   mplayer -whatever /path/to/file

for years now, and I never felt the need for gmplayer or any other GUI,
but I'm sure I'm not the reference implementation of "Joe Average User"
;)

However, there's still VLC and smplayer for those who need a GUI.
