Bug#581800: smplayer: no sound

Starting with version 0.6.9, smplayer uses pulse by default rather than 
alsa. You will have no sound if you don't have PulseAudio installed.

To fix this, open Options -> Preferences -> General and on the Audio 
tab, set "Output driver" to "alsa".
