Sorry for the big response delay. We dropped our patch that changes the
default font from freefont to dejavu. Upstream uses a hard-coded default
font and put a copy of the default font in /usr/share/vlc/skins2/fonts/
(which we replace by symlinks). That's the reason why we have to depend
on ttf-freefont. Otherwise our symlinks will break.

I see no way for having alternative default fonts.
