why libva over ffmpeg

Dear Debian multimedia maintainers,

I just realized that Debian has decided to stick with libva (ffmpeg's
fork) even though the packages are still called the same.

I wanted to know the advantages / disadvantages of this move?

It seems to me ffmpeg is releasing a little bit more often, isn't this
more desirable?

If the information of this decision is available somewhere, could you
kindly send me a link.
