Upstream mplayer will (most probably) not compile against Debian's
system libav version because it's too old.  I do intend to upload a new
snapshot to experimental when I find the time to release it properly,
but even with this new version, mplayer needs some patches.

If you are in a hurry or want to help to prepare packages in our
repository, please grab the .orig.tar.gz and the required patches (in
the .diff.gz) from this (ubuntu) PPA:

With these sources, it would be at least possible to prepare an mplayer
package that links statically against its bundled libav copy.
