And some extra details: playing with mplayer on the command line is
fine. Only when playing with smplayer is that I had problems.

With smplayer, I can play a random amount of video, but then it gets the
problem that Sven originally reported.

Just for the record, the first time that I discovered this bug was when I
was watching a movie with my wife, which was a let down. :-(

Looking closely, the bug is actually on a dependency of gecko-mediaplayer,
gnome-mplayer, which you already file a bug against.

Now, we have to wait for the maintainer to just put one simple change in the
control file and upload it...

Seems like I will have to compile a private copy of gnome-mplayer and upload
it to my PPA, without being able to share the benefits with a wider user
base.  :-(
