From what I can tell, they improved the audio plugin API in ffmpeg 0.9 quite a bit. When I was programming my plugin, I looked at both libav and ffmpeg.  It wasn't until I looked at ffmpeg 0.9 that it seemed feasible.  I attached my plugin source code:
