'alsamixer -D equal' gives this error:
ALSA lib control.c:951:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL equal
cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

This is resolved by creating a file: ~/.asoundrc

As a suggestion, this file could be created for every user that does not have
