Pulse audio with output to alsa. Is this what you expected as answer? If
not, please be more specific in your question.

Closing my laptop physically, but I guess that system -> shutdown ->
suspend (with gnome) would have do the same.

Nothing special. It works with mplayer ...

P.S: Unless I'm mistaking, usually, you wouldn't tag "moreinfo" at the
same time as your first answer to the reporter, and you should expect
that a DD would be responsive to requests for information, after sending
a report, no? At least, you can expect that from me... :)
