Bug#626703: beast: FTBFS: testsuit failures on many architectures

the beast build even fails earlier, when using GCC 4.7. unsure if this is
related, but please could you at least address the following issues, and then
trying to re-enable the tests:

 - fix the warnings about casting int to pointer of different
   size, and pointer to int of different size.
 - just use -O2, not any other flags
 - make CCLD and other tool invocations verbose.
