sorry for the late reply.
I've just tried gnome-mplayer/1.0.8-1 (with mplayer2/2.0-554-gf63dbad-1
+b1) and I am still able to reproduce the issue with seemingly all the
videos at hand: when I start gnome-mplayer the canvas is initially
zero-height until I press [Ctrl+1].

This is not going to be easy: I am afraid it won't happen soon,
unfortunately...   :-(

If I understand correctly, upstream version 1.0.8 includes this patch;
if this is actually the case, then I am already testing a gnome-mplayer
with the patch applied.
As I said, the problem persists...  :-(
