Yes, it is detailed in the commit message where I delete them (and others):

    Most patches are only needed because the makefile does not respect
    standard variables. Make it obey standard variables, and drop all that
    are unnecessary.


So, I added a patch to let the Makefile obey standard variables.
Therefore, we don't need patch 03 (CFLAGS already includes -O2), 04
(use gcc instead of ld to link), 06 (not sure why it was necessary,
builds here), and 07 (the makefile now respects the hardening flags
passed via environment).
