Mmmmh, it does not look like the same feature request.

That upstream issue seems to request a specific command-line option to
ignore gnome-mplayer preferences and only use the settings found in
~/.mplayer/config .

On the other hand, what I am suggesting here is that gnome-mplayer
should read and use (or let mplayer read and use) the settings found in
~/.mplayer/config , only overruling those settings that the user has
explicitly configured in gnome-mplayer's preferences.

I think it's a different strategy and I am still convinced that my
suggestion makes more sense...
