I am not sure I understand the answer from upstream.
It seems to be claimed that what I would like to get is simply obtained
by leaving blank settings in gnome-mplayer preferences.

But this does not seem to work for all mplayer settings: for instance,
how can I convince gnome-mplayer to use whatever initial volume is
configured in ~/.mplayer/config (20 % in my case)?

  $ cat .mplayer/config
  [default]
  ao=jack,alsa
  volume=20
  vo=xv
  vf=screenshot

I haven't found any option for the initial volume, so I couldn't leave
its value blank...

Could you please clarify?
Thanks for your time.
