It is unchecked.
I've just tried to check it, but the result is exactly the same:
gnome-mplayer often starts with zero-height canvas, as if it were
genuinely convinced that the video had a zero (or maybe 1) pixel
height.

Nonetheless, it says:

  [...]
  GMLIB-Message: VO: [xv] 400x304 => 400x304 Planar YV12
  GMLIB-Message: media_loaded: position=0.000 length=772.160 start_time=0.000 run_time=0.000 volume=1.00 player=running media=play uri=file:///.../voyage.ogv
GMLIB-Message: in media state change with state = play dontplaynext = 0
  GMLIB-Message: trying to disable screensaver
GMLIB-Message: ERROR: Failed to get value of property 'sub_source'.
  GMLIB-Message: current size = 416 x 1
  GMLIB-Message: Changing window size to 400 x 304 visible = true

which is not true, since the canvas is still zero-height.

As soon as I hit [Ctrl+1], the canvas is correctly re-sized and I get:

  GMLIB-Message: trying to disable screensaver
  GMLIB-Message: current size = 0 x 0
  GMLIB-Message: Changing window size to 400 x 304 visible = true

This time gnome-mplayer is telling me the truth, as the video is really
400 x 304 (confirmed by taking screenshots) and the canvas seems to be
correctly sized.

By the way, can you reproduce the bug, or am I the only one with this
awkward issue?!?
