The Perl team faced similar frustration (around the time I started to do
same - not sure if only I was to "blame" there) for their irc bot. That
has now been improved to abbreviate 9+ commits (or something like that,
I don't know the details). Perhaps their code can be reused for
whatever has been put into place for spewing out to -commit mailinglist.

Yes, that's one detail of a larger benefit as I see it: Being able to
easily follow what changes within each upstream change, and why.
