IMHO, yes, we should try...
Some other software would benefit from it,
e. g. Dream (a software Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), see ITP wnpp bug#691685) can use it for transmitting purposes.

By the way, Lucas Nussbaum <lucas at debian.org> is the current DPL <leader at debian.org>,
